Starting October 23, OP ENHEIM in Wroclaw will feature innovative works by textile artists from Poland, Romania and the former GDR. The title of the exhibition, Common Threads, refers to shared ideas in fiber art created from the Post-War era of the 1960s to the present day.

The subject matter of the several dozen works selected by curator Claudia Kudinova highlights the importance of common pictorial themes both in the art of Polish representatives of artistic textiles – Zofia Butrymowicz, Jolanta Owidzka, Wojciech Sadley and Małgorzata Żerwe – as well as those coming from Romania – Ritzi and Peter Jacobi, Klara Biro Jecza and Magda Ziman, and German artist Christa Jeitner. The common entanglements relate not only to the use of materials and techniques, but also to the common state-political settings in the countries that were part of the so called Eastern Bloc before the collapse of the USSR, and under which these artistic forms emerged.

– By engaging with the textile medium – that while charged with the notion of a folkloric, decorative craft was simultaneously protected by the very same notion – these artists were able to subvert the postulates of their communist regimes, which were mainly enforced among painting. – says the curator, Claudia Kudinova. – Thus, the engagement with the thread opened up space for aesthetic intervention and experimentation with modernist abstract tendencies through pictorial instances such as material, technique, form and color. Drawn directly from the textile material as well as the variety of textile techniques – including weaving, stitching or tying – the textile proved to act as a vehicle for a transmedial approach to artistic expression.

The exhibition is in cooperation between OP ENHEIM and Galerie Volker Diehl from Berlin and will open to the public on 23/10/2024 at 6:30 p.m.
