The most influential British artist of the 20 th century and a promising young sculptor will meet at OP ENHEIM. The opening of the exhibition for the public will take place on 31 January at 6 pm. We will see David Hockney’s series of works Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm and fairytale sculptures by Asana Fujikawa. David Hockney is considered one of the most important and influential British artists of the 20 th century. He is known for his characteristic, consistent style, which he uses to depict the passing world of the 1960s. On 31 January at 6 pm, David Hockney’s etchings from the 1969 series Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm will meet with the fairytale-mythological, delicate sculptures of the young Japanese artist Asana Fujikawa.
The first edition of the exhibition Figures of the Floating World, curated by Dr. Matilda Felix, was held at the Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin. The title refers to ukiyo-e – traditional Japanese illustrations of the fleeting world, which may depict both cheerful scenes and ghost stories. Drawing on the language of fairy tales and myths, Fujikawa and Hockney use classic techniques to create small-format works that are both topical and direct. The flowing world condenses in these paintings as an unbiased reflection on what actually makes us human.
Matilda Felix, the exhibition curator, takes us on a magical journey in which she combines two fascinating artistic worlds, says Kama Wróbel, programme director of OP ENHEIM. David Hockney’s less known works from the series Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm can be viewed as the subject of reflection on one’s identity or an attempt to search for one’s place in the world. The fairy tales are ambiguous, strangely appealing, but also trigger anxiety. The exhibition titled Asana Fujikawa & David Hockey. Figures of the Floating World, curated by Matilda Felix, will be presented at OP ENHEIM in Wrocław from 1 February to 20 April 2020. The opening will take place on 31 January at 6 pm. Admission is free of charge.
